Important Tryout Information

Updated: Nov 18, 2022

The 2022-2023 high school hockey season begins with the annual "Monday after Thanksgiving" first day of tryouts. Read the information below carefully to make sure you are eligible to tryout on Monday, November 28th. Parents and players should expect to receive additional important announcements from Coach Shuman and the CHS Athletics office in the upcoming weeks. Be sure to check the CHS Athletics Blog frequently and follow us on Twitter. There will be a meeting for all interested hockey candidates on Monday, November 21st right after school in the Distance Learning Lab.

What needs to be done to ensure that a player is eligible for tryouts?

TO BE COMPLETED BY A PARENT OR GUARDIAN

TO BE COMPLETED BY PLAYER TRYING OUT

Register your child through FamilyID (click here) before November 20th**

Complete Player Information Questionnaire (click here) for Coach Shuman before November 20th. Attend tryout meeting right after school on Monday, November 21st in the Distance Learning Lab.

(If necessary) Bring an updated copy of your physical to Mr. Erickson or Mr. Boen in the Athletics Office

Verify that you are academically eligible (see Mr. Erickson if unsure)

If you are new to CHS (and NOT at 9th grader), see Mr. Erickson

** Players who miss this deadline will not be able to tryout on Monday, November 28th. This has happened in the past, so please don't let this happen to you.

Where and when are tryouts?

Tryouts will begin on Monday, November 28th at Ponky immediately after school.

  • 3:00 PM: All 9th and 10th graders

  • 8:00 PM: 11th/12th graders and all returning varsity players

On Sunday (Nov 27th) night, all players will be emailed a Day 1 practice plan along with a jersey color assignment (white or green/dark). Players should have provided a non-Canton Public Schools email address on this Google Form to receive emails from Coach Shuman with daily tryouts practice plans and updates.

Players who are hoping to make the JV team for the first time are encouraged to wear a jersey with a nameplate on the back. Players must arrange your own transportation to tryouts, as well as storage of equipment during the day.

What will tryouts be like?

Tryouts will be a mix of drills and games to help coaches evaluate your skills, conditioning, strength, competitiveness, and hockey sense.

Will there be cuts?

Unfortunately not everyone may be offered a spot on the JV or varsity team. Cuts may include some 9th graders and/or players who have made the JV team in the past and have have shown limited improvement. There will most likely be cuts in all positions, including goaltenders. Most final roster decisions will be made on either Wednesday 11/30 or Thursday 12/1. All players will have a face-to-face meeting with a coach to notify the player if he made the team or not. During these meetings, we will also have honest discussions about projected playing time. If you are offered a spot on either team, it is expected that you will take it.

If I make a team, what will our season schedule look like?

Our practice and game schedules are on our website (www.cantonhighschoolhockey.com). Varsity team members should expect to skate 5-6 times per week, while JV team members will skate 3-5 times per week. Players from both teams will also be expected to attend strength and conditioning workouts with Coach Hughes 1-2 times per week. That schedule will be posted at the start of the season.

Any other questions, please email Coach Shuman at bshuman02@gmail.com. Be sure to check your email, our website and Twitter feed for important information in the future.
