Important: Tryout Registration

Updated: Nov 22, 2021

What needs to be done to ensure that a player is eligible for tryouts?

  1. Parents, be sure to register your child through the athletics office at this link by Sunday, November 21st**.

  2. Players, bring an updated copy of your physical to Mr. Erickson or Mr. Gordy in the Athletics Office.

  3. Players, please fill out this Google Form for Coach Shuman by Sunday, November 21st at the latest.

  4. Players, you must be academically eligible to tryout.

  5. Any student who is NEW to Canton High School (NOT including ninth graders) must be cleared by Mr. Erickson to tryout. See him ASAP.

** Players of families who miss this deadline will not be able to tryout on Monday, November 29th. This has happened in the past, so please don't let this happen to you.

Where and when are tryouts?

Tryouts will begin on Monday, November 29th at Ponky immediately after school. Time slots will be emailed to players once the winter sports season registration window closes. Players must arrange your own transportation to tryouts, as well as storage of equipment during the day.

What will tryouts be like?

Tryouts will be a mix of drills and games to help coaches evaluate your skill, conditioning, strength, competitiveness, and intelligence. You will receive an email next week with more information, and during tryout week, you will be emailed nightly with the following day’s practice plan.

Will there be cuts?

Unfortunately not everyone may be offered a spot on the JV or varsity team. Cuts may include some freshmen and/or players who have made the JV team in the past and have not shown enough improvement to be considered a potential varsity player. There will most likely be cuts in all positions, including goaltenders. Final roster decisions will be made on either Wednesday 12/1 or Thursday 12/2. All players will have a face-to-face meeting with a coach on one of those two days to notify the player if he made the team or not. During these meetings, we will also have honest discussions about projected playing time. If you are offered a spot on either team, it is expected that you will take it.

If I make a team, what will our season schedule look like?

Our practice/game schedule will be posted on our website (www.cantonhighschoolhockey.com) as soon as we receive ice time confirmation from the rink. Varsity team members should expect to skate 5-6 times per week, while JV team members will skate 3-5 times per week. Players from both teams will also be expected to attend strength and conditioning workouts with Coach Hughes 1-2 times per week. That schedule will be posted at the start of the season.

What can I do to be ready for tryouts? What can I do to make the team?

Our captains and seniors can best answer this question. Be sure to ask them.
