Where and when are tryouts?
Tryouts will begin on Monday, December 2 at the Ice House. Time slots were given to players at the tryout meeting (3pm or 4:20pm). Contact Coach Shuman if you are unsure about your slot. You must arrange your own transportation to tryouts, as well as storage of equipment during the day.
Do I (or my parents) need to do anything to clear me for tryouts?
Yes, all parents (of new and returning players) must register for the winter season through the CHS Athletics website (https://www.cantonma.org/chs/departments/athletics/registration) by Sunday, November 24th. If you miss this cut-off date, you will not be allowed to participate on Day 1. All physicals must be up to date and turned into the athletic office. Students who are academically ineligible at the start of the season will miss tryouts. Any student who is NEW to Canton High School (NOT including ninth graders) must be cleared by Mr. Erickson to tryout. See him tomorrow.
What will tryouts be like?
Tryouts will be a mix of drills and games to help coaches evaluate your skill, conditioning, strength, competitiveness, and intelligence. You will receive an email next week with more information, and during tryout week, you will be emailed nightly with the following day’s practice plan.
Will there be cuts?
Unfortunately not everyone may be offered a spot on the JV or varsity team. Cuts may include some freshmen and/or players who have made the JV team in the past and have not shown enough improvement to be considered a potential varsity player. Final roster decisions will be made on either Wednesday 12/4 or Thursday 12/5. All players will have a face-to-face meeting with a coach on one of those two days to notify the player if he made the team or not. During these meetings, we will also have honest discussions about projected playing time. If you are offered a spot on either team, it is expected that you will take it.
If I make a team, what will our season schedule look like?
Our practice/game schedule is on our website (www.cantonhighschoolhockey.com). Varsity team members should expect to skate on Monday at 2:50 PM and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 3:00 PM. Varsity workouts with Coach Hughes will be Monday and Thursday at 4:30 PM at CHS. JV team members should expect to practice Monday and Thursdays at 4:20 PM as well as play home games on Sunday afternoons at 2:40 PM. JV players are also expected to attend morning workouts at CHS with Coach Hughes (Mondays/Thursdays at 7:00 AM). All varsity and JV players and parents should plan for an important Player/Parent meeting on the morning of Saturday 12/7 (time and location TBA).
What can I do to be ready for tryouts? What can I do to make the team?
Our captains and seniors can best answer this question. Be sure to ask them!
